The Psychology of Touchiness

Excerpted from Yogananda, P. “The Psychology of Touchiness”, in Journey to Self-Realization. Partial digitization here.
“Mastering the art of not being touchy, of avoiding over-sensitivity, is important in the development of spiritual consciousness. An analysis of the psychology of touchiness shows that it is the result of misunderstanding, inferiority complex, and an ungoverned ego. Sensitiveness expresses [...]

Selfie

I forgot my Instagram password and my phone broke last time I tried to use it anyway. I’m ok with that.
I’ve been fascinated by optics since I was a kid. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten over the way darkness behind a window can turn it into a mirror.
This is what I see [...]

snowflake

I’ve won!
I am a beautiful and unique snowflake!
Now what?

I <3 NY

I’m listening again
to your alt-pop, New York
you call me back
make a head case out of me
sublimely syncopated
I’m not alive enough
I’m not taking on enough
The city
The city!
The only city, goddam
every other world a suburb
sprawling in mediocrity
wishing it could be you
I hear your lights
take me back
I can live out here in California
forever
but I will never be as [...]

beat the clock

How embarrassed
to be shaken by
the echoes of the past
those cycling faster
than I will ever
these
can escape the blast
but I
am slow
and fall when
the shock wave comes
again
its a strange clock
that chimes a million times
with different length and swiftness
at one catastrophe
whose time it was
at my pace
I’ve grown to like know
the inconvenient ringing
could I trade it for
a future angel’s singing?
maybe
if [...]

bang (zap)

I know I know
it’s a lot to take in
would it be any more
or less a mess of things
if I had my mouth shut
been an idle lurker
silent with the same thoughts
I’ll tell another secret:
there is a release of energy
like atoms meeting
when ideas collide
A thunderclap
like laughter
and if there is earth to receive it
not just noise
but a discharge
bang

with each exchange of information

There is something altogether tragic
about a world that’s lost its magic
Whatever world it may become
I hope it’s not the only one
you are not the kind
to be in any earthly bind
the spinning pinwheels of the mind
the glowings showing
the stirred emotions unmixed like oils
white snakes winding from their coils
climbing spines to higher knowings
these you leave behind
why enjoy [...]
